15th August 2021 the day the Taliban captured Kabul. Taliban has been capturing different parts of Afghanistan since American troops started to leave the country after twenty years of war.
Despite much criticism, president Joe Biden is firm on his decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan. He stressed the fact that this war was endless.
Afghanistan is known as the "Graveyard of Kingdoms". No superpower whether Britain, the Soviet Union, or the United States was able to capture the whole of Afghanistan. But today let's focus on one call that changed the destiny of a whole country.
The story begins on 1st May 1978, Noor Mohammad Taraki became head of state after overthrowing the Government of Mohammed Dawood. He was influenced a lot by communist ideology. He was instrumental in bringing reforms to Afghan society. One of the major reforms was to open the doors of the school for girls. This decision led to discontent among conservative sects of the country.
15 March 1979, what's the day when the government had to face its first rebellion against it. A battalion of the Afghan army revolted against the Afghan government. The rebellion was crushed with the fighters got the arms and ammunition and went towards the mountain from where the fight continued.
Taraki calls Soviet Union prime minister Alexei Kosygin asking for military help but Kosygin expresses his reservation. He was not keen on using Soviet forces in Afghanistan as it could lead to problems for his own country. Taraki persisted and suggested that the forces can be dressed as Afghan forces. This led to the formation of the Musibat or Muslim battalion.
This happened at the peak of the cold war When America saw that the Soviet Union was getting involved in Afghanistan. It used Pakistan to find Mujahedeen to fight the Afghan government.
It is believed that one sector Mujahideen was responsible for forming the Taliban. The same Taliban captured Kabul on the 15th of August.
Even though the Taliban claims to be
more reformed this time Afghani people are desperate to flee the country.
Scenes from Kabul airport are a testament to that fact.
